When construction professionals first hear the phrase “mixed reality,” it may conjure up visions of teenagers with virtual reality goggles strapped over their heads, or roaming gamers hunting down imaginary Pokémon characters with their smartphones. The truth is that mixed reality has a lot more going for it than just the “cool factor” and it is transforming how work is done in the construction industry. Using a headset with a lens, workers can see digital 3-D models overlaid on their view of the physical worksite environment. In today’s industry, mixed reality is becoming a vital tool for improving communication in the office, onsite and between locations.
Mixed reality provides solutions for three kinds of communication gaps: onsite teams can avoid misinterpreting designers’ intentions when they are able to visualize their work as it will appear in the real-life environment; bringing 3-D models into the field in ways that crews find easy to use and intuitive leads to more efficient data use; and, mixed reality facilitates training and knowledge exchange with trainees and new hires.
